I Don’t Believe Multimedia’s Story- Education Minister jabs Joyfm Over Free SHS Challenges
Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Edutwum has challenged claims by Multimedia Group about challenges confronting Ghana’s education sector as a result of the Free SHS policy. The Kokomlemle media outfit has recently highlighted challenges facing the country’s free SHS policy. Among the challenges that were mentioned by numerous callers into Joy FM’s Super Morning Show Wednesday, May 26 are; lack of accommodation facilities resulting in students sleeping on the floor, congestion in classrooms, inconvenience relating to erratic schedules for the double-track system, poor quality of food served to students, little attention to the end of semester examinations and minimal contact hours.
Appearing on Paul Adom Otchere’s Good evening Ghana show on Thursday, the Minister challenged claims made by an unidentified headmaster that the Ministry has a mechanism to spy on their activities and victimize them. “That man who calls himself the headmaster was making very serious contradictory statements”.
When asked by host Paul Adom Otchere whether he believed the claims he said no.” I don’t believe the story”
He also denied allegations that the government through the GES was spying on teachers in Senior High schools “I haven’t seen any intelligence system that sends people to schools and they spy on them and send them home”
On the issue of poor foods being prepared the Minister said although he may not deny it the situation is not that bad “Matrons do a good job. However, there may be some food that not everyone may like. Yes, there are sometimes when some food may not be cooked well. I don’t believe that we have matrons who intentionally, consistently cook some bad food for students, but if occasionally it doesn’t go well, I will not sit here and defend”. Dr. Adutwum mentioned.
According to the Minister, Multimedia could have done the country a great service by disclosing first to the GES that there is a problem in some school
“I know the media are partners in development so if you find a problem in some school at the minimum you should call the ministry first and tell us”. The Minister said
But the idea that the Ministry is spying on teachers, for what? victimizing them for what? In this day and age? The Minister quizzed. The Minister says things are on track including funding and free senior high school allocation.
The Minister said recent results that came out of the WASSCE is an indication that there is something good going on with Free Senior High School
