Nigerian President, Muhamadu Buhari and thousands of others including, the staff of  The United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc Monday celebrated its group chairman Tony Elumelu on his 58th birthday, can reports.

The Nigerian entrepreneur and investor who owns a controlling interest in Transcorp, a publicly traded Nigerian conglomerate with interests in hospitality, agriculture, oil production, and power generation came into the limelight in 1997 when he led a small group of investors to take over a small, floundering commercial bank in Lagos.

He turned it profitable within a few years and in 2005 he merged it with the United Bank for Africa. That banking group now has subsidiaries in 20 African countries and in the U.S and U.K.  Tony Elumelu also owns extensive real estate across Nigeria and a minority stake in mobile telecom firm MTN Nigeria, among other assets.

Mr Buhari who tweeted praised Mr Elumelu for his role in creating opportunities for growth and development in Nigeria


The bank shared a photo of Mr. Elumelu with the caption:

“Happy Birthday Chairman, @tonyoelumelu.

“We love you! From all of us at United Bank for Africa.”

Elumelu who is also the founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation also got a birthday wish from the foundation’s staff on Instagram.

“Happy Birthday to our phenomenal Founder, @tonyoelumelu! We are all sending you the warmest wishes and the most heartfelt prayers,” the post read.



In celebrating the philanthropist, the foundation shared “58 of some of his most impactful quotes”.

It called on African entrepreneurs, Africapitalists at heart and business persons to pay attention to the quotes.

Elumelu is married to Awele, a medical doctor. They have seven children — five girls and two boys.
